Squadron Keelboat Program
About
Established in 2000, the Squadron Keelboat Program's mission is to develop a community of world-class keelboat sailors with the skills and knowledge to lead and support high-performance campaigns.
The program conducts annual training squads for sailors over 14 years of age, catering for participants new to keelboat racing and those targeting international competitions. Utilising RSYS's fleet of Elliott 7s keelboats, the program also hosts several world-class events including the Hardy Cup in February each year.
Junior Squad
Targeting sailors who have actively competed in dinghies for 3 - 5 years or previously participated in the Squadron Keelboat Program, the Junior Squad introduces participants to keelboat racing and develops their skills to an advanced level. Throughout the season, participants will have the opportunity to represent RSYS at a variety of events in both fleet and match racing disciplines. Participants typically spend up to three years in this squad.

Senior Squad
The Senior Squad caters for high-performance sailors and previous SKP targeting international keelboat racing opportunities. During the program, participants will develop campaign racing skills and further enhance their fleet and match racing abilities. Participants will have the opportunity to represent RSYS at a variety of state to international events in fleet and match racing disciplines. Participants may also have the opportunity to compete in yacht racing events. Participants typically spend up to four years in this squad.

Open Squad
2024/2024 program details to be announced.
The Open Squad is designed for keelboat sailors and SKP Senior Squad graduates who are interested in refining their racing and campaign skills. Applications for this squad are open to teams only and teams can ask to use one of RSYS's Elliott 7s or use their own keelboat (e.g. J/70, Etchells, Yngling, Dragon) at the training sessions.

The Squadron Elliott 7s Series is a Saturday racing series hosted by the Squadron Keelboat Program. The series will consist of a number of fleet racing and match racing days on our Club’s fleet of Elliott 7s keelboats.

Hardy Shield
Hardy Shield 14-15 October 2023
Hosted by the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron Keelboat Program, the Hardy Shield is a two-day Open World Sailing Grade 4 match racing regatta. Up to eight teams will be invited to compete on our Club’s fleet of Elliott 7s keelboats.
Donated by Sir James Hardy OBE, an America’s Cup veteran, World Champion and Olympic yachtsman, the Hardy Shield aims to increase racing opportunities for sailors of all age groups.

Christmas Cup
Christmas Cup 2-3 December 2023
The RSYS Christmas Cup is the final match racing event for the year in Australia. Hosted by the Squadron Keelboat Program it is a two-day open WS Grade 4 match racing event. Up to eight teams will be invited to compete on our Club’s fleet of Elliott 7 keelboats.

Hardy Cup Sydney International Regatta
Donated by Sir James Hardy (Event Patron), an America’s Cup winner, World Champion, Olympic yachtsman and prominent RSYS Member, the Hardy Cup is one of Australia’s most prestigious match racing events and is aimed at further developing the match racing and tactical skills of youth sailors.
Since its inception in 2001, the Hardy Cup has been hotly contested by under 25’s teams and has maintained a World Sailing Grade 3 international event status. The previous winners of the event include David Gilmour, Adam Minoprio and Michael Dunstan,
Racing for the event is held over four days on magnificent Sydney Harbour. against a backdrop of the world-famous Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. In addition to this fantastic location, RSYS always provides a world-class Race Management and Umpire team to provide the best possible racing conditions.
The event is sailed in a fleet of Elliott 7s keelboats and has previously received entries from across Australia and overseas, including Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Sweden and the USA.
