Record fleet for J/70 Victorian Championship

The J/70s raced on the weekend out of Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron, Victoria. There was a record number of boats for an Australian fleet that included Sandringham Yacht Club's four new J/70s and 20 young members in their first J/70 regatta.

Tim Ryan writes, 'The most boats ever for an Australian J/70 regatta gathered at Blairgowrie for the 2023 Victorian Championships. Twenty three Open, Youth and Corinthian teams combined to create a very competitive regatta.

The event proved a happy hunting ground for RSYS, with members taking out the Open, Corinthian and Female Skipper trophies.

The Championship was won by RSYS member Rob Davis and team on Celestial, entering their first J/70 event albeit ably assisted by class expert and Squadron member David Chapman as tactician. Celestial won 2 of the 8 races sailed and featured at the top of the leader board all weekend. Their crew managed to get the best out of the light and shifty conditions, and had the best boat speed over the weekend.

We were second in the event on Vamos followed by Juno sailed by Reg Lord. Vamos and Juno also won 2 races each, highlighting the closeness of the event.

RSYS Rear Commodore, Karyn Gojnich and her all-female crew won the Corinthian Trophy from a tightly contested group including 2 Victorian boats finishing second and third.

The Youth trophy was won by Victorian sailor Ethan O'Brien.'
