A short course for the first Summer race


David Seaton skipper of One More No More writes, ‘Saturday was the first race back for team One More No More after a long Christmas/New Year break. 

We were a bit short of crew, so we negotiated with our sistership Alouette to “borrow” one of her crew for the day. Thanks guys really appreciated it.
Out to the starting area…..and here we sat and sat. Grey sky, heavy cloud cover, no wind.

Race Officer, Nick Hogg did a great job keeping the fleet informed, patiently waiting for the breeze to fill in before trying to set a course. Eventually a light South Easterly arrived, so the start was moved to Kirribilli with a short course and clubhouse finish.

We had quite a strong run out tide and a big ship in Athol Bay, essentially acting as another headland with a big wind shadow to negotiate. We watched the start of Division 1 and noticed the breeze going left.
By the Division 2 start, the breeze had stayed left making it a close reach to our first mark in Double Bay. A few boats were OCS at the Committee boat end and had to restart. We were furthest left toward the pin and were quickly onto port tack, so pretty happy in clear air for the drag race to Double Bay.

It was a marginal spinnaker run back to Kirribilli as the breeze was still left, so we two-sailed reached for the first half of the leg before setting a spinnaker into the Kirribilli mark. We stayed low and managed to get through the lee of the ship. Unfortunately (or maybe happily for us) the wind got a bit fluky and some of our fleet were caught at the ship.

The leg from Kirribilli to Rose Bay was tricky going into the mark under the Convent, as the breeze went back to the right through the Shark Is/ Point Piper gap (anything can happen up there). After rounding Rose Bay, we had a straightforward run to the finish at Kirribilli. Happy days!
