161st Squadron Annual Prize Giving winners

The Carabella Room was at capacity on Friday 26 May with Members and sailors awaiting the presentation of our Club’s finest silverware to mark the end of the 2022-23 season.

Captain Michael Lindsay reviewed the season, and remarked that it was great to be able to conduct our sailing program for the ‘whole’ season without COVID pandemic interruptions.

Commodore Christian Brook presented the following awards:

Claudia & Jeremy Gormly

KOONYA CUP
To Jeremy Gormly

The RSYS Koonya Cup is awarded to the owner of a yacht on the RSYS register who has carried out a cruise under sail and auxiliary power of more than 900 nautical miles terminating within the year.

Jeremy circumnavigated the Australian mainland counter clockwise in Manutai with a total of 16 other people including Claudia, doing various legs with him. Some legs, including the Great Australian Bight, he sailed solo. He started the circumnavigation for which he is receiving the Koonya Cup in March 2021 but was interrupted by COVID at Cairns three months later. He re-commenced in May 2022, ending back in Sydney last February. A total of 8,700nm.

YOUTH SAILOR OF THE YEAR
John Thomas Batty Trophy to Max Paul

This year’s recipient is committed to the development of RSYS youth sailing. He is very generous with his time in making youth sailors at the club feel welcome and passing on knowledge that he has acquired through his match racing and Olympic 49er campaign. He strives to put forward ideas and suggestions to further improve and continue their success especially of the Squadron Keelboat program. Max is currently competing in Europe in the 49er class. His racing achievments include:
2nd 49er Junior World Championships
5th 49er North American Championships (Pre-Worlds)
8th 49er Sailing World Cup Series/Allianz Regatta
23rd 49er World Championships
2nd Trofeo Princesca Sofia/Sailing World Cup Series
1st Sail Melbourne International 49er Regatta
2nd Hardy Cup Youth International Match Racing Regatta

COMMODORE’S SPECIAL AWARD
To Zac West

Zac West received this award in recognition of his stirling effort to rescue a young sailor in the Sail Sydney Regatta. A competitor was knocked unconscious and found floating in the water after a boom strike.  Zac was quickly on the scene and rendered assistance thereby saving the sailor’s life.

FLAG OFFICERS’ CREWPERSON OF THE YEAR
Carabella Tray to Garth Bickford

In just his first year out of school, Garth’s tremendous enthusiasm for the sport of sailing has seen him achieve outstanding results. He has competed on a variety of vessels from Ynglings to TP52s. As a Squadron Keelboat participant, he continued with Youth sailing and the RSYS Ynglings, where he notably encouraged, fostered and gave opportunities to other youth sailors from RSYS. Alongside that he has launched into the top end of the sport in a professional capacity, and yet he’s more than happy to crew on a classic yacht.

YACHTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR
Joanne Trophy to Brooke Wilson

Her sailing achievements include coming 1st in ILCA 6 NSW Youth Championships and 2nd in the Hardy Cup.

She led an all-female team called ‘Amphitrite Racing’ and competed in the 2022 Australian Women’s Match Racing Championships where they were placed third. In April and May this year, the team competed in the Women’s World Match Racing Tour against the current World champions. They were placed 7th in San Francisco and 6th in Annapolis. Her coach Marlena Berzins writes, ‘Since coaching Brooke in the Laser 4.7, it has been a privilege to watch her develop into an accomplished athlete over the last few years. As a sailor, Brooke is hardworking, tenacious, smart, tactical and fast. As a person, Brooke is a friend and cheerleader to everyone in her squad. This award is a testament to her passion for the sport, her support of others and her recognition as one of the rising stars in the sailing world. I am extremely proud to have been part of her journey and look forward to watching her continue to perform on the world stage.’

David Chapman, Dragon Prince Philip Cup

YACHTSMAN OF THE YEAR
Idris Cup to David Chapman

The “Idris Cup” is awarded to a Squadron member who has achieved outstanding results at local, national or international sailing events during the past season. The recipient must also demonstrate the art of good seamanship and a sportsmanlike conduct.

David is a long time Squadron Member and is a good role model for young aspiring Squadron Members. His results are extensive and include:

2nd J/70 Cowes week on Celestial
1st Cape 31 UK Nationals on Fanatic as Tactician
1st Endeavour Cup in Cowes
1st Champions League Sailing Final as Helmsman
1st Dragon Prince Philip Cup as Helmsman
1st Sydney to Hobart on Celestial as Tactician.

SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR AWARD
Ruth McCance Memorial Trophy to John Taylor

There is hardly a day when John’s boat Allegro is not seen on the water.

With his wife Jackie, they have sailed in the Tuesday Ladies twilight series since its inception.  They have invited countless women and in more recent times, LOTS graduates to sail with them and so encouraged and supported women in sailing.
John has participated in the Annual Cruise for many years and served on the Cruising Division committee for approximately 8 years.  He was the Annual Cruise Captain from 2019 to 2021 and did an outstanding job through the difficult COVID lockdowns.  During these lock downs he organised numerous Zoom meetings on various subjects when sailing was not an option.  His aim was to keep members in touch with each other and at the same time broaden their knowledge about sailing history and sailing techniques in general.

John has generously offered his boat for the Stepping Stone House Regatta and has served on the Stepping Stone House Committee for approximately 6 years.

He was the driving force in establishing Sailability in 1995, an organisation that provides for those with a disability who want to experience the joy and freedom of sailing. It started with 11 volunteers, 2 Access sailing dinghies and a borrowed safety boat.  It is now a Club with over 50 volunteers, 6 Access dinghies and its own safety boat and offers sailing to over 50 people living with disabilities. He runs frequent safety training sessions for volunteers and disability awareness seminars. He also spends many hours repairing boats and equipment and generally overseeing the operations of the club.

His contribution to the growth and development of sailing participation over a long period has been very effective and done without any expectation of recognition.
