Fleets back to near full strength

With the end of national championships and summer holidays for most yachtsmen and their families, fleets were back to near full strength for last Saturday’s Squadron Summer Series races and the mini regattas for International Dragon and International Yngling classes.

 

The one-design classes enjoyed the return to racing after having their competition cancelled the previous Saturday because of the forecast powerful southerly front – it hit at 45 knots mid afternoon soon after the divisions finished a wisely shortened course.

Sydney sailors celebrate National Day in 174th Australia Day Regatta

Today marked the 174th running of the world’s oldest continuous sailing regatta, the Australia Day Regatta on Sydney Harbour, the magnificent waterway that each year is the scene for the start of the famous Sydney Hobart Yacht Race and which in 2000 hosted the sailing regatta of the Sydney Olympic Games.

A Swish race to Hobart for Steven Proud

Squadron member Steven Proud has sailed his yacht Swish to first place in the Sydney 38 division of the 65th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Club, his best  result with the yacht in nine seasons of regular offshore racing.

YA Crew Club Members

Skippers are reminded that, under Rule 55, any crew member who sails in more than 3 races must become a member of YA. Application forms are available from YA or from the Sailing Office or by printing the form on the link below.

Skippers are advised that they may charge the cost of crew membership to their house accounts and this facility is shown on the form.

Hardy Cup 2010

Young New Zealand sailors have their sights set on again winning  the prestigious Hardy Cup under 25 ISAF Grade 3 Match Racing Regatta on Sydney Harbour.

Kiwis have won the Cup three times since the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron began conducting the event in its present international format and have three strong teams in this year’s Cup.


The four-day Hardy Cup, founded by eminent Australian America’s Cup and Olympic yachtsman Sir James Hardy and sailed in Elliott 6 sports boats, is scheduled to start tomorrow on Sydney Harbour with teams from New Zealand, the USA, Western Australia and New South Wales.
