Cruising Division Talk: The Martindale

Join Ralph Pickering, Julie Lowes and Steve Lowes to hear their story about the history and restoration of the 1932 historic Martindale. Built for James Andrew Tennant Mortlock, by R.T. Searles & Sons in Birkenhead, South Australia, Martindale is a 66 ft auxiliary ketch rigged motor yacht.

During WWII, the Martindale served with the Royal Australian Navy Coastal Patrol in South Australian waters before being commissioned HMAS Martindale for service in New Guinea. After the war she had several owners then sadly fell into disrepair.

In 2012, RSYS legend, Mick York with the assistance of RSYS member Tony Clark, put together a team to own, restore and preserve the Martindale as part of Australia's maritime and war history.

Today, the Martindale is owned by the Squadron members Ralph Pickering, Julie Lowes and Robert O’Callaghan. Ralph, Jen, Steve and Julie are very active in the day-to-day restoration and preservation the Martindale. Robert and Pam match the labour with funding to ensure the preservation of this important part of South Australian’s maritime history.

The Martindale will be in the pond from 5:30pm for you to visit and see first-hand before the talk at 6.20pm.

How-To: Online Reservations

1. Login to your Member Account (button on top right on desktop or bottom of screen on mobile devices).

2. Scroll down page and check your name has appeared in the Attendee box.

3. If you do not have any other guests, skip step three.

3. To add another guest, click the navy button "Add More Guest/Member". Add your guest's full name.

4. Add any additional comments (e.g. dietary requirements)

5. Click "Create Reservation".
