The Tuesday Twilight Inspiration Award is a perpetual trophy to be presented at the Tuesday Twilight final series presentation night each year. It was donated in 2019 by Jan Williams, who sadly passed away shortly after its inaugural presentation, to Genevieve Slattery of Genovefa. in 2020, it was awarded to Sandy Lawson of Rapunzel, pictured above left in pink.
The award objective is to encourage women aged 55 and over who have either sailed as a teenager/earlier in life and/or completed the LOTS program (Ladies of the Sea) at our Club, thus they are returning to sailing or starting later in life. The characteristics are the love of sailing, commitment and enthusiasm and a growing skill base.

About Jan Williams, in her own words…
“At 13 years of age I joined the Junior Sailing lessons on Sunday mornings using the Clubs Mark II moths. At the end of the season, I was fortunate to have my own Peter Shipton built Mark II moth named by the previous owner “Precocious” sail number 2170. At that time both Eve and Marjorie Freeman, Tom Simmat and Geoff Brodie were part of the sailing group and during summer vacation we would sail our boats up to Nielsen Park, turn the boats on their side on the sand and have a swim in the pool along with visiting the kiosk for some lunch, a lemon cheese tart. With my $2, I also got a Coke bottle from the machine near the ladies change room. It was tremendous freedom and I remember sailing back in a strong southerly with Tom hanging over the side singing Little Egypt until he went into the drink. On another occasion we couldn’t make it back to the Club and ran before the southerly to Clifton Gardens sending out an SOS to parents for a car with roof racks. All the while we were improving our sailing skills.
“At the end of the season the Junior Sailing Championship came around and with delight I won the first of three consecutive years. The first young woman to do so. During this time my father also owned the 8 metre “Erica J”, then a Clansman “Sovereign” and finally an East Coast “Bobby Dazzler”. The Clansman was a great boat for myself and one other competent sailor to wander the harbour.
“Over the intervening years I’ve continued my love of sailing, also owned a power boat and followed a challenging career. In 2012 I became a Member of RSYS and embarked on sailing in the Tuesday Twilight series and the Friday Twilights. I’ve been sailing with Genevieve Slattery on “Genovefa” for many years for which I am most grateful as it has given me great pleasure. My initial foray rekindled my old skills, confidence and knowledge with great satisfaction. It is the pure joy of being out on the water as a mature woman that is the motivation for presenting the award to encourage other similar women to enjoy learning, pitting their skills against the weather conditions and enjoying the special companionship of the Tuesday Twilights.”
