After a year’s delay there are now only eight days until the beginning of the 32nd Summer Olympiad in Tokyo, Japan. This is the second time Tokyo has hosted the Summer Olympics (1960) and the fourth time Japan has hosted the Olympic games (Tokyo 1960, Sapporo 1972, Nagano 1998, Tokyo 2021).
Due to the on-going impact of COVID-19, this year’s games will be very different from previous with no spectators allowed at the Opening Ceremony or any Olympic events. Despite the restrictions, over 1 billion people are expected to tune into the games via live-stream platforms and the Olympics broadcasting partners.
Over 11 thousand athletes will be competing in 46 sports at this year’s Olympics including thirteen of Australia’s best sailors. Our sailors will be competing in eight events including the Laser, 49er, 470, Finn and Nacra 17. Club member Will Ryan will be representing Australia in the 470 class as crew for Matt Belcher.
The Opening Ceremony begins at 21:00 (AEST) on Friday 23 July and then the first sailing heats begin on Sunday 25 July with the Laser and Laser Radial classes. Will and Matt’s begin racing two days later on Wednesday 27 July. The medal races will be held from Sunday 1 August to Wednesday 4 August 2021.
