The 2016 Interclub Challenge concluded last Sunday at the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club, with the Squadron Development Program Team sealing the series win with four races to spare, on a light wind day which saw big shifts on either side of the course. The Newcastle leg of the series, originally scheduled for early June, had to be postponed to last weekend after the disastrous and memorable storms that hit the East Coast of Australia a month ago.
Going into this, the final of four events, the Squadron Development Program Team had got off to a slow start in the series opener hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, scoring the regatta with a first and an eighth. However, redemption was secured on home turf in the following episode, with the ‘Squaddie’ scoring a second and a third and then followed up by a first and a second a week later at the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club.
Upon locking away first place in the Newcastle leg and the series win, Coach Klade Hauschildt commented, “The team has been going through an important rebuilding phase this winter. This (result) is a great improvement for us, as our basics have come together very well and we are starting to build on our race tactics.”
This being the fifteenth year of the annual Interclub Challenge, the Squadron adds it name again to the silverware, after winning the Series most recently in 2014 and previously again in the 2009 edition. The Squadron hopes to defend its title in 2017, when the first round of the Interclub Challenge Series is scheduled to get underway and be conducted by the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club, on Sunday 28 May, 2017.

About the Interclub Challenge
The ‘Interclub Challenge’ is a fleet racing series contested by the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron & Cruising Yacht Club of Australia. It was created in 2001 as a way to help identify & build youth sailors experience in fleet racing events who participated in a youth sailing program. In 2015, the ‘Interclub Challenge’ welcomed the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club to the series and are happy to announce that they will continue to be involved, where they will begin to host a stage of the series from the 2016 and beyond. Each participating yacht club will host a fleet race regatta day comprising of 6 windward/leeward fleet races with a maximum of 2 teams competing from each club at each event. Four events will constitute the series in 2016 with Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club opening up the series at the end of May and will conclude at the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club at the end of June. Each clubs combined scores from all four events will be calculated and an overall Series winner will be announced.
