Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen went into their medal race a far cry from their position at the London Games, when they were so far ahead of the fleet it was essentially a lap of honour.
“We delivered, but its was stressful,” Outteridge said. “We held our nerve, and ground our way back into the fleet and even though the Germans were in last for a lot of it, we knew they would pass boats, so we had to pass boats too. We just kept our head down and kept the race in our control …. although in these conditions you’re never in control.”
Outteridge said the whole regatta had been very different to London, “We came into this with more pressure as defending champions. We fought really hard the whole week but unfortunately too many errors meant we couldn’t compete with the guys at the front. We woke up this morning knowing we had to sail our best. We did that and a bit more.”
