Zac Quinlan writes, ‘Squadron boats took four of the top five positions at the 2021 Etchells Australian Championship held over the long weekend. After eight closely fought races however, CYCA’s Peter Merrington and his team of Ian McKillop and Steve “Mothy” Jarvin on First Tracks AUS1485 prevailed over Martin Hill’s Lisa Rose AUS1484, and Mark Bradford’s Pie AUS947.
A fleet of 35 Etchells competed in the International Etchells Nationals and Australasian Championship 2021 hosted by Mooloolaba Yacht Club on the Sunshine Coast. The regatta was split into two parts, with the first three races counting towards the Nationals, and the following five races counting towards both Nationals and the Australasians.
Across the four days of racing, the competition was extremely tight – the top 10 boats constantly shifted places in the series results. Overall, the 14 RSYS teams had a very successful regatta, securing 2nd to 5th in both championships and a number of category wins including first Female helm to Jeanne-Claude Strong and first Youth team to Jed Cruickshank.
The majority of the teams have now made their way back to Sydney and are preparing for the RSYS summer series and Queensland Etchells State Championships in October. ‘
