RSYS to challenge NYYC Invitational Cup

RSYS has been invited to join the challenge for the NYYC Invitational Cup  – and we’ve accepted.

Long standing RSYS Member and past Farr 40 world champion Guido Belgiorno–Nettis is leading our challenge and has assembled a strong crew including Guido’s wife Michelle, Michael Dunstan who will be the tactician for the event and our very own RSYS Captain David Edwards.

This is the fifth NYYC Invitational Cup which has been held every two years and is sailed in one design Swan 42s.

The regatta is highly prized and always very well fought by some of the best and most prestigious yacht clubs in the world.  This year the following yacht clubs will compete at Newport Rhode Island between September 9 and 16, 2017 : Bayview Yacht Club (Detroit), Eastern Yacht Club (Marblehead, Mass.), Itchenor Sailing Club (GBR), Japan Sailing Federation, New York Yacht Club, Royal Cork Yacht Club (IRL), Royal Danish Yacht Club, Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, Royal Swedish Yacht Club, Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, Royal Thames Yacht Club (GBR), Royal Yacht Squadron (GBR), Shelter Island Yacht Club (N.Y.) , Southern Yacht Club (New Orleans) and Yacht Club Argentino (AGR).

Whilst the Cup is truly Corinthian, the racing is seriously competitive with all the yacht crews fighting for the honour of their home club. Our Commodore Richard Chapman will represent the Squadron during this event and we trust that many important bonds will be strengthened during this goodwill regatta.

Patricia Young, the event chair for the 2017 Invitational Cup summed it up when she said, “A decade ago, when the NYYC created this event, we knew there was a need for a top-flight inter club competition among amateur sailors. But we continue to be pleasantly surprised by the enduring passion for this event from yacht clubs around the globe. We’ve hosted teams from 43 clubs from 21 countries from all six inhabited continents. And for each successive edition the competition gets ever more intense and winning becomes increasingly difficult. Some teams have devoted entire sailing seasons to training for the regatta. We expect the fifth edition of the regatta to be the most competitive yet.”
