RNZYS wins the Hardy Cup 2019

For the fifth time since the inaugural Hardy Cup Sydney International Match Racing Regatta in 2001, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s match racing prowess proved unrivalled on Sydney Harbour.

In a classic Sydney summer sea breeze gusting to 20 knots - two Black Hawk choppers cruising the skies and SailGP’s F50s passing impressively by the race track returning to base - the all-international final went to the Kiwis 3 – 0 over the Chris Weis-skippered Del Rey Yacht Club team from California.

“It feels great; the boys sailed really fast today,” Egnot-Johnson said on Thursday February 7 after the traditional celebratory team swim. “It’s one of the top youth match racing regattas, and this was great training in the asymmetric Elliotts before the next two regattas in New Zealand. We found the conditions really shifty - you could have a big lead but Del Rey was always right in it. It’s never over until it’s over. Big thanks to Reuben (Corbett) our coach, our family and friends, and thanks Jacinda (the NZ Prime Minister) for the shout-out at the Warren Jones Regatta in Perth last week!”

In the longer term the grinning skipper admitted “We would like to make the America’s Cup, that’s a big goal for all the boys.”

Speaking from the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, runner-up Weis said “I thought it was great competition all-round. I really enjoyed the weather in Sydney and the sailing – we just came up a bit short at the end. I think we did 34 races over four days and the last two days have certainly been long, but it’s easy to dig a little deeper when the standard is so high.”

Egnot-Johnson and his Knots Racing crew came to the annual regatta as favourites and led at the end of the double round robin. The New Zealanders bravely chose James Hodgson from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, the next skipper in line on world rankings and the current Australian Open match racing champion, to face-off in semi-final one. 

“We regretted picking James for 99% of that last race,” Egnot-Johnson laughed afterwards. “I think I sailed the final downwind with my eyes closed saying Hail Marys and hoping for a puff to get around them.”

That semi went to a sudden death fifth and final flight and Hodgson had the break until the Kiwis hooked into a gust and screamed to the finish. In the closing seconds the two teams engaged in a masterful match racing display which had spectators holding their collective breath and the umpires scrambling, flags at the ready. In the end the CYCA team was left reeling from the late steal.

Hodgson won an aggressive third and final flight in the petite-final against CYCA clubmate Finn Tapper, who lost to Del Rey Yacht Club in their semi-final, to finish third overall from 11 teams, four international and the rest from Sydney and interstate including Darwin Sailing Club and the Derwent Sailing Squadron in Hobart.

Namesake and Patron Sir James Hardy spent the final day of the series with friends watching the thrilling action from his striking 1933-launched classic yacht Nerida.

Past New Zealand Hardy Cup winners include Will Tiller (2001), Adrian Short (2009), Adam Minoprio (2007) and Laurie Durie (2004).

Next for those teams continuing across the Tasman are the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club’s CentrePort  Youth Match Racing Championship, February 13 – 17, followed by the RNZYS’s Nespresso Youth International Match Racing Cup, February 21 – 24.

Meanwhile the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron is gearing up to host the much-anticipated launch of SailGP, when six foiling F50s take to the harbour February 15 and 16.

At the mid-way point in the Hardy Cup match racing regatta, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s team skippered by Nick Egnot-Johnson lead the international field of 11 teams. 

The last time a New Zealand team left Aussie shores with the prestigious under 25 title was when Will Tiller’s crew prevailed at the 2011 Hardy Cup.

Against the usual Sydney Harbour backdrop with its distracting tourist hot-spots like the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, crews had to focus extra hard as the China SailGP F50 foiling catamaran practiced for next week’s much-anticipated SailGP launch. 

Charlie Welsh, the New York Yacht Club’s skipper, said, “It was kinda hard to sail with the SailGP boat dialing up in the background. You can hear the winches whistling, but I know if I turn around I’m going to lose this race.”

Back at the host club Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron after racing in 6-8 knot easterlies on Tuesday February 5, Egnot-Johnson (pictured above) said: “We finished round robin one tied on points with James Hodgson and Chris Weis’ teams then went into the second robin and chalked up a couple of wins. We were happy not to throw away any races in the light and shift easterlies. It was very tricky out there. The China GP team buzzed us which was pretty cool!”

Hodgson, sailing for the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, agreed it was a demanding second day on the water and is well-aware more light winds “spinning every direction” will see out the regatta. “The good thing with short course racing is you only need a local breeze. Hopefully we can complete the schedule; we’ll keep it simple and try not to lose our heads over the shifty conditions,” Hodgson added. 

RSYS race officer Rob Ridley has the option to complete round robin two on Wednesday or go straight to quarter finals. “How the remainder of the four-day Hardy Cup plays out is totally wind dependent,” Ridley said.

The Elliott 7 is a new class of boat for the NYYC team and last year’s winning skipper, Clare Costanzo, is working the mainsheet for the USA team, and bringing her Elliott expertise and knowledge of the harbour to the first-time Hardy Cup crew. 

“It’s our team’s first time in Sydney and it’s an incredible place to sail, though we could do with a bit more wind,” Welsh commented. 

Conditions for day one were ideal, a 10-12 knot sou’easter and sunny skies launching the series.

It's Hardy Cup Week!

Racing commenced today in the waters off RSYS for the annual Hardy Cup Sydney International Match Racing Regatta for under 25s.

It's the next stop in the established Trans-Tasman youth match racing summertime series which starts in Australia’s west and travels east, all the way to New Zealand.

One of two international teams coming off the Warren Jones Regatta finale in Perth on Friday is Nick Egnot-Johnson and his Knots Racing team representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. Knots Racing head to Sydney buoyed from their fourth overall at the popular west coast regatta. 

“As a team we made big improvements at the Warren Jones Regatta,” said Egnot-Johnson as he boarded a flight across the continent. “We are feeling confident with our boat handling and course tactics; coming into the Hardy Cup we are hoping to keep up this rate of improvement. We love the tight racing, well maintained boats and social atmosphere at the Hardy Cup. Last year I sailed the regatta with George Anyon and we are hoping to better our result of second place.”

Egnot-Johnson is the Hardy Cup’s top-ranked skipper based on world standings. He’ll meet the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s current Open Match Racing champion James Hodgson, the highest-ranked Aussie skipper on the starter’s list, and other names recognised in youth match racing circles like Finn Tapper (CYCA).

Charlie Welsh’s Red Star Sailing team from the New York Yacht Club is the second overseas entry to contest the Warren Jones and Hardy Cup double. 

In 2018 Clare Costanzo’s Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club all-women team made history when they broke an 18-year run of male skippers adding their name to the under 25 trophy. Final 2018 highlights video. In 2019 the host club’s Charlotte Griffin is the only female skipper, and she knows the teams coming off the Warren Jones have the advantage of being in-phase.

“They have a regatta under their belts and are coming off some really tough conditions competing against a very tough field,” Griffin acknowledged. “Next week is looking light and given we are off-weight that might work to our advantage, plus we know the area off Kurraba Point and Cremorne Point well, and how tricky it can be in a light nor’easter. Last year I had an all-female team but I changed to a mixed crew for the Harken and Musto youth regattas, and I’m going with a mixed crew for the Hardy Cup. I’m feeling confident - I just hope we’ve done enough preparation.”


RSYS is fielding 2 teams. LtoR: Coach Nev Wittey, Marlena Berzins, Mitch Evans, Nick Rozenauers (skipper), Alex Rozenauers, Zac Quinlan, Jack Littlechild, Charlotte Grey, Charlotte Griffin (skipper), Charlotte Alexander, Madi Kornman.

Tasmania and the Derwent Sailing Squadron will be represented for the first time in the prestigious Hardy Cup. Skipper Will Sargent, the current schools match racing and SB20 youth national champion who is fresh from keelboat racing the Sydney 36cr Philosopher at the Australian Yachting Championship in Melbourne and Festival of Sails at Geelong, is leading Taz Racing Team. 

Hardy Cup organiser Locky Pryor, the RSYS’s youth and training coordinator, says the 2019 edition has attracted a higher quality of interest with 25 expressions whittled down to 11 teams, four international and seven national teams sailing for their respective host clubs in the Northern Territory, Tasmania and New South Wales.

Sunday February 3, 2019 is a dedicated weigh-in and practice day and Monday morning all teams head out on Sydney Harbour aboard the host club’s fleet of Elliott 7s to begin the rigorous four-day series. Racing is due to commence off the Squadron clubhouse at Kirribilli from 1020hrs on Monday February 4 and 0920hrs thereafter. The five-stage competition is as follows: stage 1 - a single round robin, stage 2 - a single round robin, stage 3 - quarter final knockout & semi-final knockout, stage 4 - petit final knockout and stage 5 - the final knockout.

After the Hardy Cup the youth match racing caravan continues east, to New Zealand and Wellington’s Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club’s CentrePort  Youth Match Racing Championship February 13 – 17. Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s Nespresso Youth International Match Racing Cup in Auckland, February 21 – 24, marks the fourth and final event in the series before sailors return to work and study.

History of the Hardy Cup

The RSYS youth sailing program commenced in 1960 and in 2001 the club hosted the inaugural Hardy Cup, the trophy donated by longstanding regatta Patron Sir James Hardy who wanted to foster the match racing and tactical skills of young sailors.

Milson Silver Goblets underway

The annual Etchells Milson Silver Goblets regatta has got off to a fantastic start - 22 boats are contesting the five daily twilight races hosted by RSYS on magnificent Sydney Harbour. Race Officer Ian Kingsford Smith has this update:

Racing in the first heat on Monday was frustrating for the 19 competitors and the race management team. The forecast southerly winds never eventuated and the wind at the scheduled start time was north easterly. However as soon as the race committee set up the course for a NE wind, it began to veer to the right. After a general recall and a minor tweak of the course, the race committee attempted another start but it soon became quite obvious that the breeze was continuing to go right.

The start was postponed and the course was relocated. The race committee eventually got the fleet away on Course 2 in an easterly breeze with a starting line just to the east of Garden Island and the windward marks at a bearing of 095 degrees and a leg length of 0.8 nm. Although the wind continued to go right and finally ended up as a south easterly, the race committee was in no position to swing the course any further south due to the presence of Point Piper. Race 1 was won by Flirtation sailed by Matthew Crawford, Neville Wittey came 2nd and Michael Bellingham 3rd. Everyone concurred that it was an extremely difficult evening for all.

The starting areas for Tuesday’s Race 2 and Wednesday’s Race 3 were off Clarke Island and both races were sailed in a 20 knot NNE wind with course legs of 1.4nm and a compass bearing of 025 degrees for Race 2 and course legs of 1.3nm and a compass bearing of 035 degrees for Race 3. The courses provided excellent racing with 20 boats starting Race 2 and a full complement of 22 in Race 3. Each race took just on 60 minutes and everyone agreed that the sailing conditions were most enjoyable. Race 2 was won by Ciao sailed by Doug McGain, with David Edwards finishing 2nd and Peter Merrington 3rd. Race 3 was won by 2107 Racing sailed by Jason Antill, Nick Kingsmill was 2nd and David Edwards 3rd.

Races 4 and 5 are scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

Havoc wins 2019 Etchells Nationals

Congratulations to Squadron Members Iain Murray and Richie Allanson, with crew mate Colin Beashel who are this year's national champions. The regatta was hosted by the Brisbane Etchells Fleet and Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron from 13-18 January and the fleet comprised 27 boats. 

Allanson said afterwards, 'I am a buzzing a little right now as it all sinks in. This (result) was much needed after our Worlds campaign, where we had the potential to do well, but fell short, which is a tough thing to go through. So to bring it together this week was a big thing for the programme.

'The competition is hot in Etchells, and the bar has been raised, so you have to get cracking and think. There is lots of talent sailing around, and the class is in a good position', he added.

 

Also on the podium in third place was the crew of Lisa Rose, comprising Squadron Members Martin Hill and Julian Plante, crew team mates Mat Belcher and Sean O’Rourke. Jeanne-Claude Strong won the Female Helm award. 

Hill, the reigning World Champion, commented, 'We won the first race, which was great. From then on we were pretty consistent, and in the top ten mainly. No UFDs either, which certainly hampered a lot of crews here this week. We came into this regatta knowing about a couple of weaknesses, downwind especially; so learning to sail through the fleet was another positive from it all. We had to earn it all, especially when coming back from being quite deep, so we are pretty happy.'
