History Lunch 'Beecroft's Caricatures'

Starting on 26 February 2019 12:00:00

Characters from our Club’s past, as told by John Maclurcan

John Maclurcan (writer, historian, collector and inter alia, the Club’s handicapper) will select four paintings by the artist L. Herbert Beecroft, currently on display in the Northern Entrance.  In this talk he will examine:

A C Saxton – who tragically lost his life off Barrenjoey in 1926
E J Bayley Macarthur – in whose memory a trophy was presented in 1934
F W Hixson – a Commander in the Naval Brigade and awarded an OBE in 1920
T H Kelly – a prominent politician and Flag Officer in 1902
W Walker – our First Commodore, and the origin of the painting in our Club (not a Beecroft).

The Paintings will be displayed on a large screen and John will:
●   Analyse  the features of the painting, unlocking the stories attached
●   Tell you about the painter Beecroft
●   Tell you about the subject of the painting.

Behind each painting is a wealth of stories of the characters who made up the history of Sydney and the RSYS from 1870 to 1930.
