Cruising Division Presentation - Coastal Navigation
Our presenter Barry Cuneo, Rear Commodore of Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, will focus on cruising the Barrier Reef and cover route and weather planning and ‘lessons learnt'.
About Captain Barry Cuneo FNI
Barry is currently the Rear Commodore of Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron where he has been a member for 43 years and sails an Etchells, He is also completing a full restoration of the the family’s 37ft Bay Cruiser, “Antares” in Brisbane, and owns a Beneteau First 40.7 for “fun” - and yes, Barry has done a couple of Hobarts!
Boating for Barry was not an option, being son of a multiple Australian Sailing Champion, Nephew of an Olympic Sailing Gold Medallist from a family with its origins in Australia dating back to the Harbour in Sydney from the late 1800’s in 18ft Skiffs. A National, and Asia Pacific Champion in the Melges 32 Class, Barry took a youth team to the 2014 worlds in Miami to compete against the world’s best - including James Spithill and most of the Amerca’s Cup elite.
Aged 30, he was appointed the youngest Tanker Master on The Coast, on the Ampol TVA - the highest graded ship in Australia. Ship handling, management of drafts and operations in and out of shallow Ports was paramount, considering the nature of the cargo - Most of this was conducted through the Great Barrier Reef. Barry gained a Pilotage position at Mackay and Hay Point, Piloting some 400 vessels over a period of 14 months - up to 320m in length. The Nautical Institute in London recognised his expertise by awarding him a Fellowship in 1998, and appointed Barry to Council - the youngest in the world. At the time, Barry was Master of the supertanker mt "New Wisdom", the 50th largest moving object in the world, and the largest ship ever Commanded by an Australian. He was the youngest Super Tanker Captain in the World. Barry was “head Hunted” in 2003 by The Port Phillip Sea Pilots - the only truly Private Pilotage Organisation in the world, and considered the pinnacle of a seagoing career. After 12 years, and 2,500 Pilotages of vessels including Queen Mary II, Barry retired from Shipping in 2014 - with no incidents (editor addition - aside from one with Johno off North West Island aboard Northerly!)
