Squadron sailors success at Kiel Week

Over the last two weeks, several of the Squadron’s best sailors competed in the world’s largest sailing event, Kiel Week 2018.

Representing the Squadron in the Laser Radial Open division Zac West fought hard throughout the event. Unfortunately, due to a crossover with the beginning of the ILCA Laser Radial Men’s World Championships Zac missed the last day of racing. Overall Zac placed 40th out of 174 boats, a superb result. Entering the World Championships on a high, Zac continued to demonstrate his sailing and tactical abilities throughout the event. After five days of racing in varying conditions, Zac secured 25th place out of 92 boats, an outstanding achievement.

Oskar Hansen also represented the Squadron, competing in the Laser Standard division. Despite an extremely competitive fleet, Oskar sailed exceptionally well with several top 20 results. Oskar ended the regatta in 90th place out of 118 boats.

In the 470 fleet, the Squadron was represented by two teams in both the men’s and women’s divisions. Katherine Shannon and Dana Tavener continued to improve placing 17th overall, a superb result. In the men’s division, Will Ryan and Mat Belcher continue to dominate the fleet with another 1st place.

Transitioning from the 49er, Nathan Outteridge and Haylee competed in the mixed Nacra 17 division, their first event together. After a strong result in the first race, the duo suffered damage to their brand new boat after a collision with a Japenese team and their disqualification from that race. Returning for race four Nathan and Haylee pushed their boat hard and secured a string of good results. Overall they placed 9th out of 40 boats, an amazing result for their first event.

The Squadron is extremely proud of each of the sailors that competed at Kiel Week and their outstanding results.
