RSYS Development Program at Women's Marinassess Regatta

The 2017 Marinassess Women’s Match Racing Regatta took place over the weekend. This event has been conducted annually since 1996, and over the years has adapted its format in keeping with its increased popularity and to remain relevant. It enables women sailors to compete in a fun but very competitive match racing environment, and for many it is their first match racing regatta. The RSYS Development Squad had one entry consisting of: Charlotte Griffin (skipper), Maddie O’Shea (main), Sylvie Stannage (float), Charlotte Alexander (trim) and Madi Kornman (bow).

It was the team’s first match racing regatta and was a great experience as they came up against some very experienced teams, including RPAYC's Clare Costanzo (ranked 9th in Womens) and Sarah Parker (13th). There was also a team from RNZYS and two local teams from the CYCA. The weather conditions also tested the teams as they experienced strong southerly winds on Saturday and then a mixed bag of lighter pressure on Sunday.

Charlotte Griffin commented: ‘We were able to win two matches in the round robins on Saturday. This placed us 5th going into Sunday’s sail offs for 5th/ 6th place. We sailed well on Sunday and won 2 out of 3 matches against CYCA’s Jess Grimes. Our girls placed 5th overall. Thanks to our awesome coach Rosie, the CYCA for hosting and to the Squadron for supporting us and allowing us to compete.’

The team has been training hard in recent months and their result is a great indicator of how much they have improved in such a short time. The Development Squad will continue to train hard in preparation for the Australian Match Racing Youth Nationals later in September.
