Over the last two weekends, our youth sailors have been busy competing at the Laser NSW/ACT Metropolitan Championship and the 2018 NSW Optimist Championship. With similar wind conditions on both weekends, the competitions saw our sailors achieve some great results.
The Laser NSW/ACT Metropolitan Championships was held out of Drummoyne Sailing Club and saw 22 members of our Laser Squad compete. Despite scorching hot temperatures on the first day of the regatta and strong winds on the second day, our sailor performed exceptionally well. In the 4.7 fleet, our sailors took the first six places with Daniel Costandi, Jack Ferguson and Sylvie Stannage filling out the top three. In the Radial fleet, our sailors also performed well with Jack Littlechild and Otto Henry placing fourth and fifth. In the Standard fleet, Oskar Hansen continued the squad’s outstanding performance placing second. A big thank you to the parents and sailors who assisted the coaches throughout the regatta.
The 2018 NSW Optimist Championship also saw a strong performance by our youth sailors. Hosted by the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club the regatta drew a large entry list including five of our own optimist sailors. With little breeze on the first day and strong breeze on the second, our sailors kept up with the best and achieved good results. Oliver McLachlan was the highest placed Squadron sailor placing 13th out of 47. Douglas Cassidy, Isobel Payne and Spencer McKay were close behind placing 18th, 19th and 21st. Another big thank you to the parents and sailors who were extremely helpful in transporting the boats and their assistance throughout the regatta.
