As Close As It Gets!

Etchells Milson Silver Goblets –Twilight Regatta 2014.

Etchells racing is known for close competition- but the 5 evenings of racing on Sydney Harbour from Monday 27th January to Friday 31st was about as close as it gets.

Sydney Harbour was at its best with fresh to very fresh NE breezes ranging from 16-27 knots. We had very strong interest with 31 entries and after the 5 races, 4 boats finished equal on 12 points. The next two placegetters were also on equal points and in one race 9 boats finished within 36 seconds.

After countback Michael Coxon’s “North Star” took first place, successfully defending his last season’s title. In the hard conditions, Jeanne-Claude Strong in “Yandoo XX” edged out Mothy Jarvin’s  “Magpie” with Tom Slingsby steering for the first two races and Graeme Taylor (GT) coming up from Melbourne to steer in the last three. Also on 12 points was Tom King in “Iron Lotus”.  In 5th place on a count back was “Fifteen +” (Dave Clark) from “Umami”(Matt Whitnall).

The 31 boat fleet included boats from Melbourne, Brisbane, Cronulla and Pittwater as well as from the Sydney Fleet .

All agreed it is not often you have to compete against two Olympic Gold Medallists, a handful of other Olympic sailors plus several other Etchells World and National Champion crews.

The wet regatta meant that boats stayed in the Squadron pond on trot moorings, so there was no rush to the crane each night.  Many of the crews used the time saved to get some refreshment and enjoy the finger food put on by the Squadron.

Individual Race winners were:

Races 1 and 2 North Star- Michael Coxon

Race 3 Roulette- Mark Johnson

Race 4 Yandoo XX –Jeanne-Claude Strong

Race 5 Magpie- Steve Jarvin
