Congratulations to David Grundy of Minnow who won the major prize at last night’s presentation dinner: a $10,000 voucher towards a Ponant luxury cruise expedition. Ponant’s Karen Smith drew his name from those who had competed in at least 75% of the 2020/21series.
Vice Commodore Christian Brook commented, ‘Ponant is the global leader in luxury expeditions, and I would say, the perfect partner for the Squadron. I thank you for your support for the Friday Twilight series.’
‘Rain, Hail or Shine’ prizes were awarded to Koolaroo – David FitzSimons, Much Ado – Richard Brooks, and Lively – Sophie Nelson & Marcus Stewart. Also Consolation prizes to Oscar – Hugh Murray-Walker, Ostara – Glenn Richard and Star Ferry – John Conroy.
A capacity crowd of 200 Members and guests packed the clubhouse for the gala dinner, enjoying the opportunity to gather again to swap tales of the past season and admire the fine photos taken by Youth Member Connor Warner.
Addressing the audience, Karen Smith said, ‘Ponant has been honoured to be the sponsor of the Friday evening Twilight Series and we thank you for this wonderful opportunity. We feel this is such a great collaboration, as we too have a passion for the sea and a spirit of adventure; and Ponant look forward to a long association with the Squadron.’
Christian then thanked the RSYS Member volunteers, ‘We could not run our Twilight racing without our dedicated team of volunteer race officials lead by Trish Stanley. Two seasons ago, we started managing the races from the Committee vessel. This has proven to be a great success, providing a safer area for boats to start and finish. It is not unusual to have a dozen boats finishing within a two-minute period, sometimes four and five abreast across the line. The team never missed a boat. Thank you for giving up your Friday nights. It is very much appreciated.’
This season 22 races were scheduled. There were 80 block entries, with another 20 casual entries who competed regularly. The 2021/22 series will commence on Friday 8 October. Join us then!
