Piloting in Sydney Harbour webinar

22 July 2020 - 6:30 pm-7:30 pm

Captain Luke Nye, a Marine Pilot with NSW Port Authority, will take you behind the scenes and tell you about a typical working day of a Marine Pilot in Sydney, the challenges and unique nature of Pilotage in Sydney Harbour and delve into the ‘science’ behind ship handling.

Younger members of our audience will be keen to hear how to become a Pilot and what the initial and continuous training of Pilots involves; Luke will discuss simulation and manned models.

Then, taking a broader perspective, Luke will review the facts, figures, statistics about the movement of ships in Sydney and Port Botany and consider the future of shipping and Marine Pilotage.

Participants are very welcome to pose questions – please use the Chat function during the online event.

Our Speaker

Captain Luke Nye – Master Mariner
My career in the industry started when I was a teenager, working odd jobs on various small commercial and recreational vessels around the Sydney Harbour. I worked as a deckhand at Sydney Ferries and a casual tug and barge Master for five years before leaving Sydney to pursue a career at sea. After starting as a cadet on crude oil and products tankers, I worked through the officer ranks on a variety of supply vessels, anchor handlers and tankers, eventually being promoted to Master and spending my last two years at sea in command of a general cargo ship.
I have been a Marine Pilot in Sydney and Port Botany since 2017.
