Webinar: Preparing Your Body for Sailing

Sue Crafer

Both a sailor and physiotherapist, Sue Crafer brings her technical sailing racing experience and combines it with her other focus on sailing injury prevention and management, to assist us all in achieving the best possible sailing body!

Sue grew up racing (and building) dinghies every moment she could even in winter in the UK, alongside representing London University in Sailing Teams Racing, where she was studying to become a physiotherapist. Finally with many inshore and offshore miles under her belt she started racing yachts professionally. She has raced in fifteen Sydney to Hobart Yacht Races, Fastnet yacht races, Transpacs and Vic Mauis from the west coast USA to Hawaii. Sue has raced on the 100 footer “Wild Thing” for five of her Sydney to Hobart races and has also come 2nd on Line Honours a total of six times. She was the first female to cross the finish line in the x365 boat entry in the 1994 race.

Sue’s other job, apart from lecturing in Antarctica on expedition ships about racing amongst the Southern Ocean icebergs when she was competing in the 1993/4 Whitbread Round the World Race, is completely separate when she acts as Lead Sailing Physiotherapist for Olympic and Paralympic Sailing.  She has represented Australia, Great Britain and the USA in the last six Games. In fact Tokyo was the first Games where Sue hadn’t been part of a team since the 1996 Atlanta Games!

Vanessa Dudley

Vanessa Dudley is an accomplished sailor who has sailed almost everything! All sort of dinghies, including Moths, which back then were non-foiling plywood scows, and Sydney’s iconic 18-Foot skiffs.  Vanessa’s ocean-racing career includes two transatlantic crossings and many Australian coastal and offshore races.  Racing in boats from 9-30m (30-100ft) this also includes 20 Sydney to Hobart yacht races.

Vanessa will join us to discuss how to be a valuable crew member, how to prepare, how to ask questions to get the information you need for your role on the boat, how to be alert and know what’s going on so that you can contribute effectively.
