Presentation: ‘Reach farther than your grasp’
Dick Sargeant is a giant of Australian sailing.
In 1962 Dick was a foredeck hand on Sir Frank Packer’s Gretel, the first Australian challenger for the America’s Cup. They didn’t take home The Auld Mug – but they sure gave the Americans a scare!
The Gretel crew, L to R: Peter O’Donnell, Mick York, Dick Sargeant, Frank McNulty, Bruce Anderson, Brian Northam, Trevor Gowland, Magnus Halvorsen, Terry Hammond, Norman Wright, Jock Sturrock (Helm).
At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, together with Bill Northam and Peter (Pod) o’Donnell, he won Australia’s first ever sailing Gold Medal on Barranjoey in the 5.5 Metre class. (Dick is flanked by them in the photo top right.)
After Tokyo, Dick competed at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, where he and Carl Ryves sailed their Flying Dutchman into fourth place, an agonising 0.7 points off a medal.
In 2017, he was an inaugural inductee to the Australian Sailing Hall of Fame with Bill Northam and Peter O’Donnell.
The evening will be hosted by RSYS Member Max Press. Max is a former magazine publisher who is currently chronicling the Squadron’s involvement in the 1962 America’s Cup challenge, to mark the 60th anniversary in September 2022.
