Cruising Division: ‘Anaconda II’

September 23 - 6:30 pm-7:30 pm

‘To beat the Clippers – Racing to England aboard Anaconda II’.

RSYS Member John Taylor (JT) recalls his adventures as a crew member aboard the South Australian ketch Anaconda II in the 1975 Financial Times Clipper Race, sailing non stop from Sydney to Dover in the UK.

Icebergs, rations, power failures and a knock down were just some of the challenges the crew encountered.

Our Speaker

JT started sailing Holdfast Trainers, aged 12, at Brighton and Seacliff Yacht Club in Adelaide. He built then sailed a Fireball for many years but was always keen to do the Sydney Hobart Race. The opportunity came when he joined the crew of Anaconda I, doing his first race in 1973 which later led to assisting in building and sailing Anaconda II to England in 1975 while studying Economics at Adelaide University. Never one to let work interfere too much with his sailing, he has competed in 19 Sydney Hobarts, a couple of Fastnets and raced from Australia to England and back.

Stockbroking took him to HK in 1985 where he married long term girlfriend Jackie and had both their children while living on a yacht in Aberdeen Marina. Returning to Sydney in 1994, JT continued sailing Etchells and later bought Allegro, a Cavalier 395 which has been the perfect family cruiser/racer.

Some of his sailing highlights include sailing to Antarctica aboard the square-rigged Bark Europea and cruising around Australia but he claims his favourite sailing area is in our own backyard around Broken Bay.

JT’s sailing journey has provided some wonderful opportunities to travel the world, meeting inspiring people and making many lifelong friendships along the way.

In recent years he’s become involved with Sailability, assisting people with disabilities enjoy sailing on the harbour.
