1998 Hobart: a survivor’s tale

2 July 2021 - 6:30 pm-7:30 pm

Recollections and Reflections on the 1998 Sydney to Hobart with Bruce Gould.

Our speaker requires little introduction. Bruce Gould, ‘Gouldy’ to many, owner of Margaret Rintoul, is a Life Member of the Squadron. A familiar sight in Club championships, Friday Twilights and the Annual Cruise, he has also competed and achieved success in countless Offshore races, including the Sydney to Hobart which he has sailed 40 times.

Bruce skippered Margaret Rintoul to Hobart in 1989 and 1994. He was a crew member in 1998, the race beset by storm and tragedy, on board the ill-fated Winston Churchill. The boat sank, the crew scrambled into life rafts and endured unimaginable terror and hardship. Bruce was rescued by helicopter but three mates were lost.

Club Member Phil Frost will host this event and introduce Bruce.

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear one of the great maritime tales of disaster, courage and comradeship.
