Stormy Petrel 1919
'The Extraordinary 1919 Torres Strait Cruise of the RSYS Yawl Stormy Petrel'
We are pleased to present a new webinar event:
One of the rarest Beecroft portraits displayed in the northern entrance of the Club is that of Sydney Dempster. It is currently undergoing digital restoration and will be hung for the first time later this year.
This painting celebrates the cruise of his 25-ton auxiliary yawl “Stormy Petrel” to the Torres Strait in 1919. It was a most unusual yacht journey and well reported in the press at the time. The departure was celebrated with a formal dinner at the Squadron.
RSYS Life Member and Beecroft portrait historian John Maclurcan will entertain us with many surprising and fascinating details of this remarkable cruise.
The presentation will last for approximately 45 minutes followed by a Q&A session - please either email your questions in advance to James Merrington or you may submit your question online via the 'Chat' button.
