Dinghy Squads

RSYS Dinghy Training Programs

The RSYS Sailing Academy offers three dinghy training programs that are designed to cater for our Members’ wide range of interests and experience levels. Each program provides sailors with world class coaching, weekly training sessions both on and off the water, and support during the Club Dinghy series. Our dinghy training programs are a great opportunity for our Members to sharpen their sailing skills in a fun and competitive environment.

Currently our dinghy training programs include the:

  • Optimist Program (Transition, Green and Open Fleet) = Open to youth sailors beginning their racing journey.
  • Pacer Program = Open to youth sailors interested in double-handed sailing (two people) with spinnakers and teams racing.
  • Laser Program (4.7, Radial and Open squads) = Open to sailors interested in competitive one-design racing (4.7 and Radial squads open to youth sailors only).

Please note that all our dinghy programs are open to Members only. For more information about membership, please contact a staff member of the RSYS Sailing Academy (Click Here).

Try Dinghy Sailing at RSYS!

The  Try Dinghy Sailing schedule for the 2021-22 season will be announced soon.

If you are new to sailing and still unsure if where to begin, come join the fun on one of our ‘Try Dinghy Sailing’ days!

These days are a great opportunity for new youth sailors and their parents to learn more about the different sailing programs and RSYS Sailing Academy.

On arriving at our Club, our friendly coaches greet you and introduce you to the dinghy you will be sailing that day. The coaching team will then help you rig up and take you out on the water for your Try Sailing session.

Please note that for sailors who have recently completed our Squadron Tackers Program, your next step is the Transition Fleet within our Optimist Program.
For sailors who have recently completed one of our OutThere Teen Sailing Camps, your next step is the Pacer Program or Junior Squad within our Squadron Keelboat Program.

Dinghy Youth Holiday Camps

The RSYS Sailing Academy runs a number of holiday camps for the dinghy programs including the annual RSYS Youth Summer Camp at Point Wolstoncroft in January (refer below for more information).

For the school holiday camps in April, July and September, sailors are separated into their fleets: Optimist Green Fleet, Optimist Performance, Pacers and Laser Performance. These camps offer a mix of fun and skill-based activities suitable to each sailor’s ability.

Lunch is provided for all sailors with the choice of a burger, fish & chips or a salad, as well as a gelato!

To utilise an Active Kids voucher, enter the discount code ‘Activekids’, then enter the voucher code in the additional registration field.

Eligibility: Sailors must be a current RSYS Youth Member.

September Holidays

The September Holiday Camp has been reinvented. The NSW State Youth event at Point Wolstoncroft has been cancelled, so we will run an event out of the Squadron – the format will depend on current health orders and restrictions.

More details to come.

December Performance Camp

The RSYS Dinghy Performance Camps are a great opportunity for sailors to further develop their boat handling and racing skills in a fun and friendly environment. The camps are open to all RSYS youth members sailing an Optimist, Pacer or Laser and include lunch each day.

Programs Invited: Optimist, Pacer and Laser
Date: Wednesday 15 – Friday 17 December 2021
Timing: 12:00pm-5:00pm

RSYS Summer Camp

The biggest and best camp of the year! Our annual camp tradition is a week’s residence at the Point Wolstoncroft Sport and Rec Centre on beautiful Lake Macquarie. We tow up Optis, Lasers, Pacers, SUPs, and RIBs. It’s a week full of watersports, activities, games and challenges. The camp relies on parent volunteers to help with the running, assisting with a variety of tasks.

Dates: Monday 17 – Friday 21 January 2022.

More information coming soon.

Communication

The RSYS Sailing Academy uses both Team App and WhatsApp to communicate to sailors and parents. Team App is used for more general announcements, whereas WhatsApp is used for more instant communication between sailors, parents and class representatives.

Sailors and their parents will receive an invitation to both groups on joining the program. Please note that you are required to create an account for the Team App group.

For more information, please contact a staff member of the RSYS Sailing Academy.

Volunteers

Volunteers are the backbone of our Club, and we rely on their assistance when organising training sessions, race days and other events both on and off the water. We are extremely grateful for their support and are always looking for more helpers.

As a small token of our our appreciation, the RSYS Sailing Academy puts on a range of courses  to help upskill our volunteers, such as Powerboat and Race Officer courses.
