160th Squadron Annual Prize Giving winners

The Carabella Room and the Neutral Bay Verandah were at capacity on Friday 27 May with Members and sailors  awaiting the presentation of our Club’s finest silverware to mark the end of the 2021-22 season.

Captain Michael Lindsay reviewed the season, and thanked all sailors for navigating with good spirits a challenging environment marred by the COVID pandemic.

Commodore Christian Brook presented the following awards:

Julie Clarke, Joanne Trophy

Joanne Trophy to Julie Clarke

Julie races Senta in Friday Twilights and on Saturdays. In the past she has been a regular participant of the Squadron Annual Cruise. Julie serves our sailing community in many ways: she is the Saturday Division 2 representative; she mentors novices; volunteered as a coach at the LOTS Coaching Regatta and regularly takes Academy students out on Senta as part of the Squadron’s Keelboat experience days. Julie is also an active volunteer race official for our club racing and regattas and is coxswain for our committee vessels, Mischief and Gitana.

Idris Cup to Will Ryan

Will won Gold at the Tokyo Olympic Games in the men’s International 470 class with teammate Mat Belcher. They won in dominant style,  with a race to spare.  At RSYS we see him regularly in the Etchells fleet with fellow Member Martin Hill.  He also races with the Farr 40 fleet.  Will is always willing to share his experiences with our membership, in particular our Youth Members with whom he chatted via Zoom in the lead up to and following his achievement.

Carabella Tray to Richard Allanson

Richard is an active sailor across a number of one design classes: Etchells, MC38, Farr 40 and J/70s. He came first in the newly formed Gold Racing League Summer Championship this year and is the current Etchells Worlds Champion with his crew Iain Murray and Colin Beashel. Richard is incredibly generous with his time and advice, helping sailors across the fleets. He shares his technical knowledge in boat preparation and performance with many skippers, developing their boats skills both on and off the racecourse.

John Thomas Batty Trophy to Finn Alexander

Finn has coached and mentored the Junior Laser squad for three years. He was active in the recruitment and retention of Youth sailors within the Squadron, resulting in increased numbers and participation in local competition.  In 2017 Finn commenced training with the Australian Sailing Squad ICLA 7 (Laser Standard) Squad. During te past year he competed in: the 2021 ILCA Senior European Championships, 13th of 200 competitors; 2021 ICLA 7 Men’s World Championship, 24/200; 2022 Semaine Olympique Francaise De Voile, 12/125; 2022 Trofeo S.A.R Princesa Sofia, 15/200.

Tony Colemen, Ruth McCance Memorial Trophy, with Trent Goldsack

Ruth McCance Memorial Trophy to Tony Coleman

Tony achieves outstanding race results on Euphoria whilst also welcoming a wide range of crew aboard, from novice to experienced. Tony has trained and mentored many, instilling the values of seamanship and safety – all within the competitive racing environment. He has developed, over the last 30 years, a whole generation of competent and successful sailors. Tony has a wonderful reputation as a fair, skilful and competitive sailor who is very well respected by his fellow skippers. He has made Euphoria available for the Women’s weekend regattas and regularly hosts Youth sailors and adults from the Academy Learn to Sail Programs, for a ‘big boat’ experience.
