The highly successful Division 5 of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron’s 2006-2007 summer sailing season is racing as Division 4 this season, with all the potential for another summer of exceptionally close yacht racing on the Harbour between popular smaller cruiser/racers.
The fleet this season includes Folkboats, Hood 23s, Hood 25s, a Seaway 25, a Bonbridge 27, a Farr 727, a Compass 750 and a Catalina 28 – yachts of similar size and boatspeed competing in harbour races that often see no more than 10 to 15 minutes between first and last across the line, just seconds often separating the top placegetters on corrected time.
Last season ten different boats scored at least one win on corrected time, with just one point separating the first two boats, Kirsten II, a Hood 25, and Dreamtime (a Folkboat) after 24 races for the Main Season Pointscore.
This is the type of competition Division 4 is looking forward to attract for the season of 2007-2008 – smaller cruiser/racers in the 25 to 28 feet LOA range. such as Hood 25s, Hood 23s, Folkboats, Bonbridge 27s, Catalina 28s, Endeavour 26s and Triton 24s of which there are many on moorings or marinas around Sydney Harbour just waiting to go racing.
Courses for Division 4 are usually of about 9 to 10 nautical miles around laid Squadron marks of fixed YA marks designed to provide at least long windward and two leeward legs. With six or seven mark roundings, these are courses that demand good helming skills and efficient crew work in tight fleet racing.
The Squadron welcomes competitors from other clubs to compete in its Saturday inshore fleet races in all its divisions during the season, in particular from those clubs that do not provide regular Saturday summer competition.
Over the season of 2007-2008, boats in Division 4 racing on Saturdays for the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron’s Main Season, Spring and Summer Pointscores, the Short Inshore Series and the Royal Prince Edward Yacht Club, which will include special Trophy races.
