German crew wins 2007 Dragon Worlds in Ireland
Four Australian crews, three from the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, contested the International Dragon World Championship sailed on Dublin Bay last week, in a series dominated by European and Irish competitors.
In an impressive line-up of current and former World champions, Olympic medallists and even past America’s Cup challenge skippers (Australia’s Gordon Ingate), the German crew skippered by Tommy Muller won the light air series.
Second place went to the Swiss Olympic medallist Ulli Libor, third to Britain’s Len Jones while four Irish boats also figured in the top ten of the series – the first Dragon Worlds to be sailed in Irish waters.

The light conditions did not suit the Australians, sailing chartered boats with the best placed Australian crew being Andrew Merrett, Roger Clayton and Sam Cooke who placed 62nd overall.
Octogenarian and 53 year Squadron member Gordon Ingate, with his crew of Peter Bellingham and Colin Forster, placed 64th overall, their best placing being a 42nd in the 70 boat fleet.
In 67th place came Robert Alpe with his crew of Iain Finnegan and David Seaton, and in 68th place were Wolfe Breit with his crew of Mark Hewitt-Park and Clive Jones. – Peter Campbell
