Australian sailors, headed by RSYS member Mark Bethwaite, have won five division titles at the Laser and Laser Radial World Masters Championships which ended at the weekend at the Bay of Roses in Spain.
Bethwaite, a former Olympic sailor in the Flying Dutchman class and past World Champion in the J24 and Soling classes, as well as a several times past Laser Masters World Champion, took out the 2007 Laser Grand Masters Championship.
The prominent Sydney business leader and past Chairman of the Australian National Maritime Museum outsailed a fleet of some 70 Grand Masters sailors from around the world, winning four of the ten races.
The Masters Worlds Championships, which will be hosted by Gosford Sailing Club at Terrigal, NSW, next February, attracted some 420 competitors in total.
Other Australian winners were defending champion Brett Beyer in the Laser Apprentice Masters, Lyndall Patterson in the Laser Radial women’s division, Greg Adams in the Laser Radial Masters (with eight wins in ten races) and Peter Heywood in the Laser Radial Grand Masters (seven wins in ten races) while Kerry Waraker placed second in the Laser Radial Great Grand Masters.
