Chris Harper in winning form with his Yngling

By Peter Campbell

Chris Harper,  in addition to being the long-time honorary editor of the Squadron’s ‘Logbook’,  is an accomplished sailor,  in particular in the International Yngling class.  Last Saturday, however,  he achieved a somewhat unique winning double, with boats he owns winning two divisions.

Obviously, Chris was aboard only one of these boats, showing his skill in winning Division 2 of the Winter Series with his Yngling Shining Star, finishing a close second across the line and taking first place on corrected time.

At the same time,  the cruising yacht Crackerjack, which he owns in partnership with Dennis Galvin, continued its winning ways in the Non Spinnaker division.

In Division 2,  Shining Star won from Lahaina II (Len Buttenshaw) and Aurelia II (Norman and Thomas Longworth).  In the Non Spinnaker division,  Crackajack took line honours and first on corrected time from Caroline la Douce (Peter Jones and Graeme Smith) and Azzura (Michael Baston).

Sailing in a moderate breeze,  the fleet made quick time around the course, giving skippers and crews ample time to enjoy the social atmosphere back at the Squadron.

In Division 1, the entire fleet sailed  the course in less than an hour and 50 minutes,  with Ian MacDiarmid’s Hell Razor leading the 11 starters home in in 1 hour 11 minutes and 07 seconds.   However, it was not good enough to beat on handicap, Willyama, with Trish Stanley on the helm, which took corrected time honours by a comfortable three minutes.

Hell Razor placed second overall, third going to the consistent Great Xpectations (Rod Wills).  On IRC ratings,  Hell Razor placed first from Euphoria (Tony Coleman) and Great Xpectations.
