Next Saturday’s final race of the Squadron’s Winter Series will decide the winners and placegetters in Division 1 and 2 following last Saturday’s frustrating race which saw just six boats finish the course.
The six finishers were in Division 1, out of 12 starters, while no boats in Division 2 and the Non Spinnaker division completed the race in winds that ranged from 2 to 6 knots…and less at times.
Matrix (Andrew Parkes & G Smith) took line and handicap honours in Division 1 getting the gun are after relatively close and tactical race with Ian Macdiarmid’s Hell Razor. On corrected time, Matrix’s margin was a massive 44 minutes and 39 seconds from Willyama (Trish Stanley), with Ellipse (Brian Bergin) taking third place.
Willyama’s second place has given Trish Stanley a one point lead from Rod Wills in Great Xpectations going into next Saturday’s final race. Willyama is on 17 points, Great Xpectations on 18 points after each boat has dropped its worst three races. Great Xpectations’ third drop was its sixth place on Saturday.
Third overall is Jonathan & Mary Threlfall’s Campeador on 22 points despite being a DNF on Saturday. A close fourth is One O Nine (Robert Salteri & Geoff Weir) on 23 points although it, too, was a DNF.
With no results for Division 2 last Saturday, the pointscore remains unchanged. The evergreen Hood 25 Kerstin II (John Bowman/Ken Chase/John Goldie) is on 11 points after three discards, with Fast Forward (Roman Tarnawsky) on 13 points and Shining Star (Chris Harper) on 16 points. Kerstin II has won three of the eight races races completed by the Division 2 fleet.
Almost unbeatable in the Non Spinnaker Division is Dennis Galvin & Chris Harper’s Crackerjack on 7 points, with its nearest rivals Caroline la Douce (Peter Jones & Graeme Smith) on 11 points and Beowulf (Stafford Watts) on 15 points. Crackerjack has won four of the eight races completed by the Non Spinnaker fleet.
