Handicapping spreading the winners

by Peter Campbell

Good handicapping, along with some variations in the weather, is spreading the winners in the Squadron’s Winter Series.

After four races, each division has had a different winner each Saturday, with only a few points separating the top three boats in the pointscores.

Last Saturday Ray Harris’ Beneteau 44.7 Honeysuckle became the fourth race winner so far in Division 1 and,  with a scorecard of 2-2-7-1, heads the leader board on 12 points.

In second place is race one winner Campeador (Jonathan & Mary Threlfall) on 16 points with a scorecard of 1-DNF-4-5; third overall is race three winner Enigma (Garry & Anna Connery) on 19 points from placings of 10-DNF-1-2.

No boats finished race two in either Division 2 or Division 3 (each receiving one point for starting) but there has been a different winner in each of the three races completed.

A win on Saturday by Philippe Odouard’s Cool put the First 30 only 4 points behind the previous Saturday’s winner Kerstin II (John Bowman/Ken Chase/John Goldie).  Kerstin II on 10 with placings of 3-DNF-1-5 and Cool on 14 with a score of 5-DNF-7-1.

In the non-spinnaker Division, Crackerjack (Dennis Galvin/Chris Harper/David Ward), Tallawonga (Christopher Deane) and Caroline La Douce (Graeme Smith/Peter Jones/Gregory Clark) are equal on 8 points, while Ostara (Donohue/Kennedy/Richard/Smith) is fourth overall on 14 points and winner in last Saturday’s race.
