13th May 2008

Saturday was a wonderful autumn day on Sydney Harbour, sunny, quite warm and with just moderate water traffic. But for 24 of the 29 skippers and crews out racing in the Squadron’s Winter Series it was a hopeless day.
Of the 29 starters in the three divisions only five boats finished the course after more than three hours of slowly moving in the lightest of breeze. The five finishers were all in Division 1, not boats made it around the track in the other divisions.
Honeysuckle, Ray Harris’ Beneteau 44.7 was the fastest, taking 3 hours and just over 5 minutes, just four minutes ahead of Ray Entwhistle’s J109 Sweet Chariot, then a long gap to Anthony Coleman’s Euphoria.
On corrected time, the honours went to Sweet Chariot from Honeysuckle, third place going to Eclipse, Brian Bergin’s North Shore 369.
The previous Saturday’s winner, Campeador, was among the eight boats that failed to finish within the time limit.
A reminder that Friday, May 23, is the deadline to enter the Winter Series pointscore. Compete in 75% of the races and be eligible to win the Mariner Boating series prize of a trip for two to compete in the 2009 Lycian Yacht Rally in Turkey.
