Guy Stening described his win overnight in the final race of the M30 division of the Sail Newport Regatta off Newport, Rhode Island, as “just like the final race of the America’s Cup in 1983.”
The difference was that three boats were involved an Stening and his crew’s tactics were tested to the optimum in covering two boats, unlike Australia II and Liberty nearly 25 years ago.
Sailing Optimum, Stening won the final two races to clinch victory in this important lead-up regatta to the M30 World Championship to be sailed on the same course in late September.
