A good fleet enjoyed excellent sailing conditions last Saturday for the opening race in the Squadron’s Winter Series and the expectations are for another sunny day this coming Saturday, but with a fresher breeze.

The RSYS Winter Series runs over 11 Saturdays through to 25 July, with races finishing back off the Squadron well before the late afternoon chill sets in.

Division 1 competition was particularly keen last Saturday with 11 boats racing in a breeze that backed from a light nor’wester to a southerly that reached 15 knots on the sunny autumn day.

Anthony Coleman’s Euphoria led the fleet home after a close race with Great Xpectations (Rod Wills) but on corrected time the winner was Jonathan & Mary Threlfall’s Jeanneau Sunfast 36 Campeador.   Their winning margin, however, was just ten seconds from Peter Davenport’s Arcturus II, third place in Division 1 going to Euphoria.

Kerstin II and Kupu Gila off to a good start in Division 2

Smaller fleets turned out for Division 2 and the Non-Spinnaker division, with Tom Cehak’s Therapy winning Division 2 from the Dragon class Abracadabra, sailed by Nicolas Hogg and John Marty, third going to Kupa Gila (John Anstey).  Abracadabra had fastest time.

In the Non-Spinnaker division, Alan Husband’s Limelight got the gun, but had to settle for second place on handicap to Enigma (Gary Connery), third going to Crackajack (Chris Harper & Dennis Galvin).
