Squadron member Steven Proud has sailed his yacht Swish to first place in the Sydney 38 division of the 65th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Club, his best result with the yacht in nine seasons of regular offshore racing.
Proud, whose son Anthony also sailed on Swish in the 628 nautical mile ocean classic, collected the Sydney Yachts Trophy and the Prince Albert of Monaco Cup for his Sydney 38OD division win and the CYCA trophy for second place in IRC Division 3.

Overall, Swish placed fourth astern of the two new Beneteau First 40’s, Two True, skippered by Andrew Saies from South Australia, and Wicked (Mark Welsh) from Victoria, and another Sydney 38, the lower rating Next, skippered by Ian Mason from the CYCA.
Swish beat Next across the line by a mere five seconds, but the IRC corrected time margin between the two Sydney 38s was just under 29 minutes in favour of Next.
Other Squadron members who fared well in the variable weather conditions of the Sydney Hobart course were Ed Psaltis who placed 11th overall and second in IRC division 2 with AFR Midnight Rambler and Syd Fischer’s Ragamuffin which placed 20th overall and second in IRC Division 1.
Strewth, skippered by Geoff Hill with Bruce Gould aboard in his 40th Sydney Hobart, placed 48th overall, Paul Clitheroe’s Balance 62nd overall while Andrew Wenham and David Burt’s SES Inch by Winch placed sixth overall in the PHS division.

Bruce Gould received his 40 year medallion from Tasmanian Premier David Bartlett.
