Congratulations to all the winners of 2008-2009

By Peter Campbell

Congratulations to the owner/skippers and the crews of the yachts that ended up winners of the Main Series pointscores when the Squadron’s summer sailing series of 2008-2009 came to an end last Saturday.

All competitors extend their thanks for the professional administration of the Sailing Office and the on-the-water expertise of the Race Management teams who maintained the tradition that the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron does provide the best club and one-design regatta racing in the nation.

Not to mention the mathematical skills and insight of John Maclurcan in administrating the Performance Handicap System which achieved such close results in the mixed divisions throughout the season.

Consistency was clearly the name of the game in the handicap results for the four mixed divisions and in the three international classes that raced with the Squadron over the long season of 26 races.

Take Division 1 where the Northshore 11.6 Willyama, owned by Richard Barron and Stephen Sanlorenzo, won the Main Series and Summer Series. Willyama finished six points clear of Charles Curran’s Iain Murray-designed  Sydney in the Main Series despite the 60-footer winning the final race.  Third place overall,  four points back was Geoff & Debbie Davidson’s Jackie Clare.

Willyama’s scorecard included only two wins, but she never placed worse than eighth on corrected time – apart from a ninth last Saturday, which was a discard.  She also won the Summer pointscore

In Division 2 Peter Edwards’ Gondwana finished six points clear of Peter Davenport’s Arcturus II after a constent summer of sailing which saw her never finish worse than sixth in the races she contested. Allegro (John Taylor) finished third overall.  Paul Hendrey’s Half Hour won the Summer Series.

Division 3 saw the closest result with Terry & Julie Clarke’s 10.4m Bavaria Senta winning the Main Series by just one point from Bloodhound (Andrew Rodger & Malcolm Shaw).  On Saturday, Bloodhound finished second but Senta’s sixth was just enough to win the Main Series. John Jeremy’s Tingari placed third overall.

The Summer Series went to John Nutt’s Come By Chance.

Again, consistency throughout the season gave John Bowman, Ken Chase and John Goldie’s Kerstin II yet another Main Series pointscore. Kerstin II finished the season 10 points clear of the two Hood 23s, Brother Hood (Tony Craven & Jack Rigg) and Esquisse 2 (Richard Staines).  The Summer Series went John & David Prentice’s Hum.

The International Dragon and Yngling classes finished their Main Series on Saturday, with Carl Ryves’ Sidewinder a clear series winner in the Dragons from David Seaton’s Abracadabra, which won the final two races, and Wolf Breit’s Tatsu.

Pourquoi (Hamish Jarrett) scored a runaway pointscore win in the Yngling Main Series from Yertle (James Hawkins & Andrew Howe) and Black Adder (Gary Pearce).

The International Etchells had completed their Main Series the previous Saturday with David Sturrock steering Shindig to a comfortable pointscore win from North Sydney Station (Ed & Will McCarthy & Michael Coxon) and Humpback (Stephen Barlow & Peter Gardner).
