With the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron’s summer sailing season 2008-2009 drawing to a close, Commodore Bill Wood and Peter Chapman’s Kookaburra II scored a well deserved victory in Division 1 on Saturday.
The role of Commodore often precludes the senior Flag Officer of competing actively in racing and Kookaburra II has missed quite a number of Main Series events.
Kookaburra II excelled in the light breeze on Saturday to finish third in fleet and first on corrected time from Main Series pointscore leader Willyama (R Barron / S Sanlorenzo) and Honeysuckle (Ray Harris). It was Kookaburra II’s third winner of the summer.
Division 2 saw a win by John Taylor’s Allegro, while Division 3 went to Jim Dunstan’s former Sydney Hobart Race winner Zeus II by just four seconds on corrected time from John Nutt’s Come by Chance.
Kerstin II (John Bowman/Ken Chase/John Goldie) clinched the Main Series in Division 4 with her fifth win of the season, while in the International Yngling class Hamish Jarrett steered Pourquoi to her seventh win of the season and a clear Main Series victory.
International Dragon Main Series winner Sidewinder (Carl Ryves) had to settle for second place to David Seaton’s Abracacadra.
The International Etchells wound up their pointscore racing for the summer season with heat seven of the Club Championship going to Humpback (Stephen Barlow & Peter Gardner) in a close fleet race.
The win assured Humpback of second place overall in the Club Championship to Bushfire (Jervis Tilly) which was unbeatable going into Saturday’s race. Bushfire finished with 12 points, with race results of 5-3-1-2-1-dnc, Humpback on 13 points with a scorecard of 1-4-dnc-1-6-1.
The Etchells will complete their season with a two-day Mini Regatta next Saturday and Sunday, which includes racing for the historic Eaton Cup, while the other divisions and classes will finish with the final Main and Summer Series races on Saturday.
While most Main Series winners have been decided, next Saturday’s final race will decide the Summer Series winners and placegetters in most divisions and classes.
