A day of light winds with a major late change of direction favoured boats at the back of the fleet in Saturday’s heat seven of the Squadron Winter Series on Sydney Harbour.
The race began in a light 8 knot westerly breeze that continued to fade away to virtually nothing before a seabreeze moved down the harbour, lifting slowly from 5 to 8 knots and backing from ENE to NE and finally from the North.
In Division 1, the late change in the breeze favoured Roman Tarnawsky’s Young 88 Fast Forward and although second last to finish in the 11-boat fleet, she placed first on corrected time. This was Fast Forward’s third win of the Winter Series.
Pointscore leader Hell Razor, skippered by Ian MacDIarmid, placed second to strengthen her overal lead in the Winter Series, with third place going to John Waring’s alouette.
Casual entry Gannet, Simon Coventry’s Warwick Hood-designed Halvorsen 25, also finished second last in Division 2, but scored a two minute handicap win from the consistent Aurelia II (Norman & Thomas Longworth) which took line honours. Third went to Kerstin II (John Bowman/Ken Chase/Julius Goldie) with pointscore leader Gupu Gila (John Anstey) in fourth place.
In the Non-Spinnaker division, Azzura (Michael Baston) also finished second last in the small fleet but on handicap took first place. Second place went to Enigma (Gary Connery), third to the casual entry Gecko (Stephen Face) which also led the fleet home at the end of a long, slow day of sailing.
