With just one race to sail next Saturday, only a handful of points separate the leading boats in each division of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron’s Winter Series.
With 36 boats entered for the Winter Series, fleets have been excellent every Sunday, with 28 boats turning out last weekend for some close competition around the buoys.
Peter Davenport’s Arcturus II won Division 1 from Ian MacDiarmid’s Hell Razor by just 28 seconds on corrected time, with just two seconds to third placegetter Allegro (John Taylor).
That close margin was important to Hell Razor as it strengthened her pointscore margin to four points from Jonathan & Mary Threlfall’s Campeador going into the final race. With three races discarded, Hell Razor is on 19 points, Campeador 23 and Arcturus II on 24 points.
In the IRC pointscore, Hell Razor leads with 9 points from Allegro 12 and Euphoria (Anthony Coleman) 14 points.
Fourteen boats turned out last Sunday in Division 2 with Darty & Gary Glover’s Wizard scoring a comfortable handicap win from John Jeremy Tingari, third place going to Lahaina (Len Burtenshaw).
The three leading boats on the pointscore were unplaced and after discarding their worst three races of the Winter Series, John Anstey’s Kupu Gila has a net 17 points, just two ahead of Kerstin II (John Bowman/Ken Chase/John Goldie) on 19 points with Tom Cehak’s Therapy third in standings on 23 points.
In the Non-Spinnaker division, Crackajack (Chris Harper & Dennis Galvin) won last Sunday to close the overall pointscore gap. Going into the final race, Enigma (Gary Connery) is on 11 points, leading from Limelight (Alan Husband) and Azzurra (Michael Baston) both on 15 points and Crackajack on 17.
