Former Olympic yachtsman Carl Ryves continued his remarkable success in the International Dragon class when he steered Sidewinder to three successive wins in last Saturday’s RSYS Mini Regatta for the Dragons and Yngling classes.

Sidewinder was the name of the Flying Dutchman class boat that Ryves and crew Dick Sargeant sailed in the Mexico City Olympic Games, missing out on a bronze medal by .7 point.  The pair continue to sail together on the Dragon class Sidewinder.

With three straight wins, Sidewinder was the stand-out Dragon of the Mini Regatta, with Karabos VIII (Norman Longworth) and Indulgence (Robert Alpe) were the next best boats, each notching up a second, a third and a sixth place.  On handicap, the winners were Karabos VIIIIndulgence and Wizzardry (David Mason and Andrew York).

In the International Yngling class, Hamish Jarrett in Pourquoi had two wins and a third,  with Chris Harper in Shining Star the other heat winner following a fourth and a third.   Karma (Gary Wogas) sailed consistently with three second places.

On handicap, Gordon Ingate’s daughter Cristine and Mel Nathan scored two wins and a second with Uncanny, the other handicap winner being Mistral (Ivana Gattegno).

A fleet of 84 yachts turned out for the third day of Squadron racing this season, including 13 in Division 1.  Charles Curran’s Sydney led the fleet around the course,  but had to be content with a 12th on corrected time,  first place going to Willyama (R Barron/S Sanlorenzo/T Stanley) from Norske (Bruce Dickson & Catherine Hespe) and Ellipse (Brian Bergin).

Division 2 attracted a bigger fleet this weekend with Peter Davenport’s Arcturus II taking handicap honours from Steve Wyatt’s Double Trouble and Alan Husband’s Limelight.

The cruising Etchells Wallop (Bryan Collisa & Stephen Wall) got the gun in Division 3,  but had to settle for second on corrected time to Robert Albert’s Norn which came in close astern in the fleet.  Zeus II (Jim & Judy Dunstan) placed third.

The first four boats to finish in Division 4 also filled the handicap results, although not in the same order. Third to finish and first on corrected time was Orpheus (Mike Harris & Mal Forrester), while first to finish and second on handicap was Velocity (Allan Levick).  Tom Cehak’s Therapy finished second to take third place overall.

Fifteen International Etchells raced, again producing close one-design comptetition. Special Mention (Mark Anderson & David Griffith) won a hard-fought duel with Two Speed (Nigel Nattrass & John Dunn) and Humpback (Stephen Barlow & Peter Gardner).
