Sydney sets the pace in Division 1

Charles Curran 60-footer Sydney set the pace when the Squadron’s summer sailing season of 2008-2009 resumed last Saturday, taking line honours in dashing style and also winning Division 1 on corrected time.

Sydney, winner of the Spring Series, enjoyed the moderate to fresh south-easter to finish 12 minutest ahead of the fleet,  but her corrected time winning margin was just three seconds.

That close runner-up was Equinox (John Molyneaux & Peter Bray) with third place going to Honeysuckle (Ray Harris).

With some members still away on holidays, the overall fleet fleet size was down, even though it was also a Short Inshore Series day. However, Divisions 3 and 4 did include several new entries for the Summer Series.

Division 2 also produced a line and handicap double for John Taylor’s Davidson 12 Allegro with a close corrected time win from Disko Trouper (Jules Hall) and Spirit of Freya (Nicholas Hogg).

Another double win in Division 3 with Charles Moore’s cruising Etchells Casamajor  take handicap honours from Lahaina II (Len Burtenshaw) and Mingara II (Philip Crane) in a strong fleet of 13 starters.

Long markers filled the first two placings in Division 4 with John & David Prentice’s Northshore 37 Hum winning from Don Taylor’s Folkboat Clara Sayers, third place going to Spring Series winner Kerstin II (John Bowman/Ken Chase/Julian Goldie).

The Etchells fleet was down to 15 starters but the racing was as close as always in this one-design fleet,  with Humpback (Stephen Barlow & Peter Gardner) winning by 24 seconds from The Front Row (Ben Lehmann) with another 33 seconds to David Sturrock’s Shindrig.

Other two boats fronted up for the Dragons after the heading program of the Prince Philip Cup regatta, with honours going to veteran Gordon Ingate in Whim.

In the small Yngling fleet, Pourquoi (Hamish Jarrett) won narrowlay from Black Adder (Gary Pearce) and Uncanny (David Chapman).

Although next weekend is the Australia Day weekend,  there will be a Summer Series pointscore race on the Saturday and the 173rd Australia Day Regatta on the Monday.
