30th May 2008
By Peter Campbell
The Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron’s 2007-2008 Annual Prizegiving was an event not to be missed by all those skippers and their crews who competed in the 2007 – 2008 sailing season on Sydney Harbour and offshore.
Held on Tuesday this week, 27 May, the Prizegiving gave each of us the opportunity to view all the 50 perpetual trophies for which we have raced over the past spring and summer season.
The glittering display of gold, silver and pewter was simply magnificent, a reflection of the Squadron’s history of yacht racing going back to 1862. Some of the perpetual trophies date back to that century.
Adding interest to the evening was the running of a pictorial display of the trophies and the yachts that took part in Squadron events during 2007-2008, including the Saturday afternoon competition, twilights and the May Cruise.
While the Prizegiving is that evening when winners are grinners, it was also an opportunity for competitors to express their appreciation to the long list of volunteers on the Race Management Team who give their time voluntarily to make yacht racing with the Squadron the success it always is.
Many of the volunteers are past or currently active sailors willing to give something back into the sport in which they have, or still are, gaining so much enjoyment.
Each of the near 60 volunteers was recognised with a trophy at the Prizegiving while three members received Special Volunteer Appreciation Awards – John Maclurcan (handicapping and administration support), John Kirkjian (rules, special regulations and technical support) and Peter Campbell (media and communications).
